Comeragh Crossing Walk & Challenge

Date: Saturday 1st July 2006

Welcome from the Chairperson
Peter ManganThis year marks the 10th anniversary of the Comeragh Crossing, from Clonmel to Dungarvan. The walk has developed over the years into a national event, and has raised more than €100,000 for charity. The committee led by Michael J Power have organised a great day on the mountains, catering for walkers of all levels and fitness. Last year we had 200 walkers take part.

Behind the scenes there are over 60 enthusiastic members who volunteer yearly. They man the checkpoints; lead the walkers over the route; brew the tea on the mountaintops; and make dinner back at the check-in; and still remember to turn on the hot water for the showers!

This year we will be celebrating the 10th “Birthday” that night with Music & Craic for all. So brush up on your party-piece, and don’t forget to pack your tin whistle as well as your walking boots. See you on the day. Happy Walking
Peter Mangan

The Walk:
Approx. 35km with an ascent of 1,150m with beautiful scenery on a good day but has proved a difficult walk on an inclement day. The average time to cover the full route is approx. 10 hours. There are 3 stages to the Walk and it is possible to join the walk at the start of Stage 2 or Stage 3. Entrants can join a group led by experienced leaders. Experience is needed to complete the entire 3 stages.

The Challenge:
In 2000, the Club recognised that the Walk or Comeragh Crossing, as it had now also become known was generally becoming widely accepted as a National Walk and so introduced the challenge element to it: Approx 40km with an ascent of 1,920m. Participants must have completed other long walks with at least 1,500m climbing or more. This is a walk for the well experienced, with a high level of fitness.

The event is the biggest single undertaking in the Club’s calendar and whilst it is primarily a social and interaction event, there is another side to it. The Club recognises that such an event should avail of the opportunity to attract sponsorship for worthy charities and since its inception, more than €100,000 has been raised for local charities.

33% of the proceeds raised this year goes to West Waterford Hospice with the remainder going to:

  • No Name Club
  • National Council for the Blind
  • Cappoquin Day Care Centre
  • Deise Day Care Centre
  • S.E.M.R.A
