Grades Of Walk
The Club walks on every Sunday throughout the year and provides two grades of walks weekly, namely B and C with A walks taking place on every second Sunday.
Grade A Walks: these walks are for the well experienced with a high level of fitness required. Generally, they are not less than 8 hours duration and can often be 1500m ascent or more. Participants must be aged 18 years or over.
Grade B Walks: these walks are generally 4 to 5 hours duration with a climb usually of not less than 600m. Participants must be aged 16 years or over and those under 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also a Club Member.
Grade C Walks: these can be up to 4 hours duration and vary from track, forest or river routes to walks with moderate climbs often up to 500m. Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also a Club Member.
Grade D Walks: these are easy walks, mainly on relatively flat roads and paths, (forest trails and beaches), at an easy pace for up to 2 hours. Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also a Club Member.
During winter time, A and B walks start at 1000 hours while C walks start at 1330 hours; when summer time commences, the A and B walks start at 1000 hours and the C walks start at 1400 hours. Start times are noted on the Monthly Walk Sheet and it is worth checking these prior to walks as start times are often changed depending on location of walk.
All walkers meet at the TSB Car Park, Davitt’s Quay at the times listed.
hillwalking is an adventure sport and not devoid of an element of risk. To minimise risk be prepared; boots, rucksack, waterproofs, a packed lunch, hot drink, warm hat, gloves etc.
The MCI recognises that participants in hillwalking should be aware of and accept any risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
Remember: No Boots, No Walk
Each walk is led by a recognised Walk Leader of the Club who will generally elect an assistant leader (often to act as “sweeper”) on the day. The Leader reserves the right to refuse persons from walking and also to change the start time, location or duration of the Walk. We ask that walkers respect the Walk Leader and any issues relating to the Walk, especially where interaction with the public is required, should be dealt with by the Leader only.
Those wishing to walk with the Club for the first time are requested to attend the Club Meeting prior (held on the first Tues. of every month) where they can get an opportunity to meet the Walk Leaders and discuss the walks.
