Dungarvan Hillwalking Club History

Dungarvan Hillwalking Club - Click To Go To Our Photo GalleryThe idea for a walking club came from Gay Morrissey of Ballinroad who is now honoured with the role as Club President. She contacted Fr. Ahearne CC, Abbeyside and Ann Veale, Ballinroad and when they held that first meeting in Lawlor's Hotel on Feb. 1995, Dungarvan Walking Club was born.

The Officers elected to run the club were:-

Chairperson: Maura Kelly
Secretary: Deirdre Fennell
Treasurer: Rose Whelan

Maureen Veale, also from Ballinroad was a member of the Mallow Walking Club and provided valuable help and advice. Deirdre Fennell did more than the job of secretary and was the driving leadership force in those early years. In the first few months, the Club struggled to find suitable and interesting walks but when George Harney joined, his knowledge and experience from working with Coillte provided the Club with the impetus it required and so began a growing membership, which today is almost at 150.

In 2000 the Club became affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Ireland (MCI)

In 2002, the Club changed its name to Dungarvan Hillwalking Club.
